Finding firefighters through heavy smoke
In December 1999, six firefighters in Worcester lost their lives because they couldn’t find their way out of a burning warehouse building through heavy smoke. This tragedy led professors at Worcester Polytechnic Institute to initiate the PPL (Precision Personnel Locator) system project. When completed, the RF-based PPL system should enable rescue teams to find injured firefighters in burning buildings.
