The growth of multiplay services and the technology advances in Internet architecture are causing bottlenecks that have convinced network operators, service providers, and data center managers of the need for higher throughput at faster speeds: 100GbE for aggregation and core networking applications and 40GbE for server/storage applications.

Ixia’s 100GbE Development Accelerator System is the first to verify the new 100GbE and underlying MLD (multilane distribution mechanism), according to the company. MLD is at the heart of 100GbE technology, making 100GbE possible. The system tests the 100GbE physical coding sublayer, which was approved as the baseline proposal by the IEEE, with the underlying multilane distribution architecture. For 100GbE equipment developers, Ixia’s 100GbE system makes it easy to check lane mapping and skew, virtual lane synchronization, and alignment.

The 100GbE Development Accelerator System provides engineers with the test capability necessary to prove their high-speed components can handle 100GbE traffic generation, reception, and error handling. The system includes a chassis, a one-port bidirectional 100GbE interface module, and test application software. Traffic generation capabilities include Ethernet streams with internal or external clocking. Valid and error statistics are provided in real time at line-rate. This system also shortens cycle times by offering 100GbE test capability while the P802.3ba standard is under development.

The 100GbE Development Accelerator System costs $395,000.

    AXS-635 Triple-Play Test Set
    EXFO
    www.exfo.com

When you are deploying triple-play services, accurate testing is crucial for resolving issues that affect quality of service. To fill this need, EXFO has developed the AXS-200/635 Copper, VDSL2, ADSL2+, and IP Triple-Play Test Set, which combines triple-play testing with multilayer 30-MHz copper-spectrum, VDSL2 speed verification with backward compatibility to ADSL1/2/2+.

The AXS-200/635 comes standard with these single-module test interfaces:
    • copper test interfaces: for physical layer qualification and troubleshooting of the copper loop plant. The full 30-MHz bandwidth enables prequalification of loops for any DSL technology, including the latest VDSL2 standard;
    • universal DSL interface: enables auto-sync to any ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+, and VDSL2 circuit, providing technicians with information that reduces guesswork regarding which DSL they are connected to; and
    • dual Ethernet interfaces: for triple-play quality-of-service testing in the home network.

The AXS-200/635 reduces truck roll with single-ended copper testing up to 30 MHz, minimizing both capital and operational expenditures. Combining copper, DSL, Ethernet, and IP layer test capabilities, the AXS-200/635 automatically conducts a multilayer analysis, quickly identifying whether errors are in the physical layer, access layer, or IP layer.

    MW90010A Coherent OTDR
    Anritsu Company
    www.us.anritsu.com

As broadband Internet access spreads worldwide, the increased demand for fast international connections will require an increase in the capacity of current networks, which will in turn require the laying of new submarine cables. According to Anritsu, its MW90010A is the only C-OTDR (Coherent OTDR) on the market ready to address the resurgence of sub-optical deployments.

The MW90010A uses an innovative coherent detection scheme to produce improved dynamic range and sensitivity. It can measure optical submarine cables as long as 12,000 km with 100 times the accuracy of previous instruments. The wavelength of the built-in light source can be tuned to within ±0.2 nm in the range of 1535.03 nm to 1565.08 nm to support DWDM submarine cable systems. A measurement time of 15 min and dynamic range of greater than 17 dB also enable the MW90010A to accurately measure optical submarine cables with optical repeaters spaced at intervals of 80 km or more. In addition to fault detection, the C-OTDR captures important waveform data, including cable loss, bending loss, and fiber length, to allow detailed cable evaluation.

A compact and lightweight design provides easy portability for use almost anywhere – including on board ships. Base price of the MW90010A C-OTDR is $400,000.

    Precision Reflectometer 4400
    Luna Technologies
    www.lunainnovations.com

Luna Technologies says that its Precision Reflectometer 4400 (PR 4400) takes advantage of industry-leading micrometer spatial resolution to measure optical reflections as a function of distance.. With a single connection, single scan, the PR 4400 quickly provides optical module inspection and diagnostic capabilities to locate and troubleshoot splices and connectors, fiber macrobends and breaks, and more.

The instrument caters to R&D, design, and manufacturing professionals who want to reduce their time and cost of test and increase throughput and yield. In the past, it may have taken up to 3 min to obtain one scan using a conventional reflectometer. But with the PR 4400, users can measure a myriad of parameters in a matter of seconds. The system comes with a small, easily transportable platform and the capability to view entire assemblies up to 2 km with no dead zone. The PR 4400 offers micrometer spatial resolution at up to 70 m, dynamic range up to 55 dB, and sensitivity of –90 dB. It can be used to measure a variety of components and assemblies. The PR 4400 automates return-loss verification for connectors and cables, verifies PON/FTTx components, performs high-resolution fiber and waveguide characterization, and provides automated failure analysis and fiber routing verification.

Base price of the PR 4400 is $65,000.
