Machine uses helium gas to detect minute leaks

Pernicka now offers cumulative helium leak detection (CHLD) services for testing the package integrity of high-reliability, hermetically sealed electronic devices. This company-developed, single-step process exceeds the current limits of both gross-leak and fine-leak testing. Since helium is among the smallest of molecules, it can readily pass through materials that other molecules cannot. Thus, it is useful for detecting very small leaks. The Pernicka Model 700G CHLD test system combines an ultra-high vacuum chamber with a programmable mass spectrometer to find, analyze, and identify gases that escape from the device under test. The machine can be used to test objects of almost any size, shape, or material, provided the object can tolerate vacuum.
