Matlab gets major upgrade

The MathWorks has upgraded Matlab 7 and Simulink 6. Matlab 7's compiler now supports all Matlab functions so you can compile any Matlab application into a stand-alone executable, a C or C++ shared library, a Microsoft COM object, or an Excel plug-in.
A redesigned desktop lets you manage multiple documents. You can save custom layouts and shortcuts to commonly used commands. An updated array editor and workspace browser lets you more easily edit and graph your variables.
Matlab lets you preserve data types in calculations and process larger integer data sets. With single-precision arithmetic, linear algebra, FFT, and filtering, you can perform calculations in data sets larger than are possible with the traditional double-precision math.
Simulink graphically connects Matlab scripts and other software objects. Version 6 lets you save models of large systems as multiple files, where each file represents a specific model within the system. With separate files for models, you can develop and test each model of a large system separately.
Base prices: Matlab 7—$1900; Simulink 6—$2800. The Mathworks, Natick, MA.www.mathworks.com.
