IEEE approves mobile broadband wireless access standard
-- Test & Measurement World, 6/23/2008 1:43:00 PM
The IEEE has approved a new standard for mobile broadband wireless access: IEEE 802.20. The IEEE says the standard will enable the worldwide deployment of always-on and interoperable multivendor mobile broadband wireless access networks. It was developed by the Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA) Working Group and sponsored by the IEEE 802 Local and Metropolitan Area Networks Standards Committee.
IEEE 802.20 specifies physical and medium access control layers of an air interface for interoperable mobile broadband wireless access systems that are operating in licensed bands below 3.5 GHz and are optimized for IP-data transport. The standard sets data rates above 1 Mbps for mobile users at vehicle speeds up to 250 km/hr (about 155 mph). www.ieee.org.
