Network tester verifies IPv6 security

On July 24, the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC, jitc.fhu.disa.mil) and University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL, www.iol.unh.edu) conducted Moonv6 multivendor interoperability tests. The goal of the tests was to validate the maturity of network security devices and other service systems that support Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). The US Department of Defense (DoD) will use the results to set a baseline set of standards that manufacturers must adhere to in anticipation of the US government-mandated IPv6 cutover beginning in 2008.
Test equipment for the interoperability test was supplied by Agilent Technologies, which supplied its N2X network tester. Agilent reported that participants used the tester to exercise their equipment's application aware functionality and defense mechanisms. The transition traffic forwarding test suite delivered a distribution of seven application protocols over native IPv4 and IPv6, while simulating network threats and exploits.
"As implementations mature and proliferate, and applications emerge from the first stages of development, testing of the IPv6 interoperability and security with the realistic test methodologies and reliable analysis tools will be increasingly critical," said Erica Williamsen, senior manager, software and applications, UNH-IOL, in a prepared statement. "By facilitating the transition and adoption of the new protocol, the event mirrors the global mobilization around IPv6 and promotes a deeper understanding of the technology and its implications."
