The Network Processing Forum (NPF) and the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) have agreed to a merger that is expected to be finalized in June. The two forums, which will retain the OIF name, will merge the NPF’s technical committee work into the existing technical committee of the OIF.
"This merger is a win-win situation for everyone involved," said Joe Berthold of Ciena and President of the OIF. "It will enable us to provide a broader scope of activities to our members and bring greater depth to our interoperability and benchmarking work."
"A combined group will cast a wider net for participation in the creation and adoption of implementation agreements," said Chuck Sannipoli of IP Infusion and Chairman of the NPF.
Launched in April of 1998, the OIF is a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from data and optical networks to help advance the standards and methods of optical networks. The purpose of the OIF is to accelerate the deployment of interoperable, cost-effective, and robust optical networks and their associated technologies.
Founded in 2001, the NPF is an international industry consortium of networking semiconductor, software, and OEM manufacturers. Its goal is to accelerate the adoption of network processing technologies through the development and implementation of network processing standards and benchmarks.
