    Christopher Ziomek
    President and Founder
    ZTEC Instruments
    Albuquerque, NM

Christopher Ziomek founded ZTEC Instruments, which designs and manufactures modular instrumentation products, in 1996. He has over 20 years experience in the test-equipment industry, as an instrument designer, engineering manager, and entrepreneur. At ZTEC Instruments, he guides the company’s strategic vision and technology roadmap. Prior to founding ZTEC Instruments, he worked as a section leader at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and as a microwave engineer at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. He holds BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of New Mexico.

Chief editor Rick Nelson spoke with Ziomek at Autotestcon and followed up with an e-mail interview.

Q: Will you be supporting LXI, PCI Express, and PXI Express?

A: ZTEC is the only modular instrument provider that is platform neutral. We think LAN and PCI/PXI Express connectivity—like the other modular platforms—will find a place in the industry. As such, our current roadmap has plans to support emerging platforms and connectivity options.

Q: What makes your products unique?

A: We are unique in that we provide traditional benchtop capabilities in our modular instruments. We feel this combination is necessary as users migrate from traditional rack-and-stack to modular solutions. The combination gives the user the best of both worlds, such as benchtop-instrument ease of use and modular-instrument connectivity and channel density.

Our products include many benchtop oscilloscope features not found on most digitizer products. These features include advanced triggering, multiple acquisition modes, and onboard data processing. Our software is also unique in that we provide a benchtop-instrument-mimicking interface. Anyone who has ever used an oscilloscope will be able to operate the new ZT4610 family of products with very little training.

In addition, our products include the software required to make an integration project a success. The software tools include drivers and soft front panels. However, if customers need additional assistance, they are welcome to contact our applications support group at any time.

Q: What's unique about your CompactPCI and PXI products?

A: Our cPCI/PXI products are the only instruments that provide benchtop-instrument capabilities in a modular form factor.

Q: Do you sell to end users, integrators, or both?

A: We sell to both. As a provider of general-purpose oscilloscope technology, we produce products that can solve a wide range of applications. The company growth is shared between purchases from new and repeat customers.

Q: What lead you to found ZTEC?

A: Before starting ZTEC, I worked as a RF instrument design engineer for the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and as a section leader at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. While at LANL, I developed a strong affinity for New Mexico. This led me to Albuquerque when founding ZTEC. I started ZTEC with a desire to build a world-class organization that would have a significant contribution to the New Mexico economy. The state of New Mexico has been very supportive of our efforts, and we are achieving the company's initial goals.

Q: Can you elaborate on ZTEC's strengths and future plans?

A: Moving forward, ZTEC plans to lead the convergence of modular and traditional instruments. Our product roadmap is very exciting and will include patent-pending technology that will continue to enable our customers to solve the most demanding test applications.

ZTEC has aggressive plans for the future, and we will continue to innovate and provide superior products to the marketplace. ZTEC's strength lies in its employees. Our unique culture and values provide the cornerstone for our success. ZTEC provides an enthusiastic team-oriented environment. Above all, we value innovation, excellence, discipline, character, accountability, and customer satisfaction.
