  • IEEE EMC Symposium: Suppliers showcase their latest creations

2009 IEEE International Symposium, Austin, TX, August 17-21. www.emc2009.org

Despite the economic downturn, several companies introduced new products at the 2009 IEEE EMC Symposium in Austin, TX.

ETS-Lindgren announced the Model 3183 omnidirectional biconical antenna, which is designed for EMI chamber field-uniformity measurements as required for CISPR 16 immunity tests. The antenna works over the 1 GHz to 18 GHz frequency range. It operates in a horizontal or vertical plane.

Teseq engineers developed several new products in time for this year's Symposium. The company's PMM 9010 digital EMI receiver uses DSP (digital signal processing) that functions as a digital IF downconverter and RBW (resolution bandwidth) filter. The DSP also implements filters for The CISPR 16-1-1 standards. Functions include an RMS-AVG (root-mean-square-average) detector and an APD (amplitude probability distribution) filter that lets you test at frequencies above 1 GHz. The instrument can also function as a spectrum analyzer from 9 kHz to 30 MHz. It operates on rechargeable batteries.

The company also introduced the IOB 4000 input/output box that lets you monitor and control equipment that's in a chamber during an EMC test. The box consists of four analog channels for monitoring voltages up to 24 V in equipment under test (maximum sample rate is 1 ksample/s). Four 24-V digital channels let you monitor digital signals such as solenoid controls. The box also has eight low-level digital inputs and eight digital outputs that let you monitor TTL-level signals and product TLL-level control signals. A fiber-optic communications port lets you control the unit from a PC that's outside the test chamber using USB or RS-232. The unit comes with PC control software.

Teseq also introduced the PMM EP-600 and PMM EP-601 active broadband probes for measuring electric field-strength inside an EMI test chamber or TEM/GTEM cell. The probes communicate to a host PC through a fiber-optic link over USB or RS-232. The probes can sample data in the X, Y, and Z axes simultaneously. Probe frequency response is 10 kHz to 9.25 GHz. The EP-600 probe has a field-strength range from 1 V/m to 140 V/m while the EP-601 operates up to 500 V/m.

Rohde & Schwarz has entered the broadband amplifier market through a joint engineering effort from its instrumentation and broadcast divisions. The BBA-100 broadband amplifier uses a modular design that lets you add amplifier modules when you need to increase power or widen bandwidth. You can get up to 500 W output power with frequency ranges that cover 9 kHz to 250 MHz, 80 MHz to 400 MHz, and 250 MHz to 1 GHz. Power ratings are based on the 1-dB compression point rather than the 3-dB point. The instrument has a built-in Web server so you can operate it over a network and it has a GPIB port for local control in a test rack.

AR introduced the ATR26M Arrow Series of broadband log-periodic antennas. The arrow series are smaller than the company's previous models. They have frequency spans from 150 MHz-1GHz to 26 MHz-6 GHz. Maximum power levels range from 300 W to 6 kW, depending on the model.

Fischer Custom Communications exhibited a susceptibility tester for 1000Base-T Ethernet lines. It can inject transient signals for IEC 1000-4-5 surge-generation requirements. Two models can produce surges up to 1 kV or 4 kV, respectively. The instrument lets Ethernet signal pass through while injecting interference.
