Pentek PCIe carrier board targets high-performance tasks
-- Test & Measurement World, 9/11/2009 9:00:00 AM
Based on a half-length x8 PCIe 2.0 form factor, the 7800 carrier board from Pentek hosts a PMC/XMC module to fulfill a wide range of software-radio, data-acquisition, and beam-forming applications. With the 7800 series, designers can employ PCIe, FPGAs, and high-speed interfaces in low-cost PCs, as well as in blade servers.
"While there are many PCIe carrier boards in the market, we discovered there were none built with high-performance applications in mind," said Rodger Hosking, VP of Pentek. "Data-flow requirements, cooling considerations, and power consumption needed to be addressed to fulfill the performance demands of our customers. The new 7800 carrier boards are complete system solutions that satisfy all of these requirements," he concluded.
In addition to the x8 PCIe interface, the 7800 carrier board provides a number of Gigabit serial connectors for inter-board communication, while a built-in fan delivers forced-air cooling without requiring an extra slot. A 4-pin standard disk-drive power connector accepts power directly from the PC power supply to augment PCIe slot power. This supports modules with power consumption as high as 50 W.
The 7800 carrier board is currently available with the following PMC or XMC modules: a dual multiband transceiver with Virtex-4 FPGAs; a multichannel transceiver with Virtex-4 FPGAs; a quad 200-MHz, 16-bit ADC with Virtex-5 FPGAs; a 256-channel DDC with four 200-MHz, 16-bit ADCs; a 32-channel DDC with four 200-MHz, 16-bit ADCs; a multifunction dual 400-MHz ADC and dual 800-MHz DAC with Virtex-5 FPGAs; and a multifrequency clock synthesizer. Modules are fully assembled and factory-tested PCIe assemblies that simply plug into a host system.
Each 7800 series subsystem comes with all necessary software and documentation. This includes GateFlow FPGA design kits and ReadyFlow board support libraries. The 7800 line supports both Linux and Windows. Prices start at $9995.
