Synchronize network timing with PTP v2
-- Test & Measurement World, 11/1/2009 1:00:00 AM
The XLi IEEE 1588 Grandmaster, a GPS referenced grandmaster clock and IEEE 1588 measurement and validation tool, now supports version 2 of the PTP (Precision Timing Protocol). The instrument has two timing ports for optional master or slave modules. As a master clock, the XLi can time stamp Ethernet packets with 50-ns accuracy. With two grandmaster modules, it can provide timing for two networks with slave ports. With a slave module, it can operate as a timing slave referenced to another grandmaster clock for making Ethernet network timing measurements.
Using one master and one slave module in the XLi, you can perform loopback tests on a network element to measure the latency it adds to a network. The XLi reports timing measurements through a serial port using Telnet or SNMP protocols. You can analyze timing data with optional PC software.
