  • Vision 2009: Basler positions GigE cameras to supplant FireWire versions

The Ace series will initially consist of four camera models in monochrome and color.

Rick Nelson, Editor in Chief -- Test & Measurement World, 11/4/2009 10:04:28 AM

Basler Vision Technologies chose Vision 2009 (November 3–5, Stuttgart, Germany, www.messe-stuttgart.de/VISION) to introduce its Ace GigE camera, a 29x29-mm unit with a starting price of 299 euros. Arndt Bake, GM of Basler, said the new compact low-cost camera targets applications now served by analog and FireWire models.

See related article "Vision application combines sports, science, government, and business."

Bake said the trend toward adoption of GigE in machine-vision applications is clear, with analog camera shipments having peaked several years ago and with FireWire camera shipments already in decline. Dominant players going forward, which Basler intends to be, he said, will need to master GigE technology.

In addition to meeting footprint and cost targets, successful GigE cameras will need to support low overall machine-vision system costs, said Henning Tiarks, project-management team leader at Basler. GigE cameras such as the Ace do that, he said, in that they require no frame grabber and can work with low-cost cables and accessories. In addition, he said, the Ace features PoE (Power over Ethernet), allowing one cable to handle data and power. Finally, he noted that the camera works with the company's Pylon software, which comes with more than 50 application programming examples to get software-shy analog cameras up to speed quickly.

The Ace series will initially consist of four camera models in monochrome and color, with resolutions from VGA to two megapixels and featuring a C-mount adapter. All cameras are equipped with a CCD sensor.

The first Ace models will be available in March 2010.
