  • LabView gets a 2010 boost

As a way to increase productivity, NI has added Packed Project Libraries to help developers distribute code to users.

In conjunction with NIWeek, being held this week in Austin, TX, National Instruments unveiled LabView 2010. The effort behind this year's version of the graphical programming environment is on speed and productivity.

NI's software engineers rewrote the LabView compiler to increase execution speed. The company claims an overall 20% improvement, with some functions remaining at previous speeds while the speed of others has increased by 400%.

As a way of increasing productivity for LabView programmers and users, NI has added Packed Project Libraries to help developers distribute code to users. Developers can encapsulate portions of compiled LabView code in a packed library, which contains a single file with a .lvlibp extension. The libraries can shorten development time for others looking to incorporate that code into larger projects. Opening a packed library lets you see, but not edit, the LabView code in the library.

LabView developers and test engineers who use instrument drivers have long had a way to find drivers at www.ni.com, but LabView 2010 lets you search for and install drivers from within LabView. The Instrument Driver Finder will connect a computer with Internet access directly to ni.com. Searches are restricted to NI-certified drivers only.

LabView 2010 incorporates the usual long list of new features. Some simply improve development time by reducing the number of clicks needed to gain access to a function. Others, though, let you configure a system more easily. For example, LabView 2010 lets you configure LabView Realtime PXI systems through a browser. Previously, you needed to open NI's Measurement and Automation Explorer.

NI has also opened a LabView Tools Network, an app store for LabView.

And to help attendees make the most of their visit to the NIWeek show, NI has announced a mobile app that provides access to the conference schedule, technical sessions, speaker bios, and the expo hall.
