Motorola backs ultra-wideband standard

Motorola has joined forces with XtremeSpectrum (Vienna, VA) to promote ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for wireless LANs. The two companies will collaborate on developing silicon and platforms for wireless systems based on UWB.
"Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) evaluated the wireless multimedia market and the UWB landscape," says Behrooz Abdi, VP and general manager of the Motorola SPS radio products division. "XtremeSpectrum has established credibility as the only UWB company with working silicon. We believe our collaboration will lead to a worldwide UWB radio platform that will accelerate adoption across a wide range of consumer and computer markets."
Motorola is also backing Xtreme's proposal for the draft IEEE 802.15.3a alternate physical layer standard for wireless networking. The standard covers short-distance wireless personal area networks targeting high data rates for wireless multimedia distribution and is due for completion in mid-2004. The alternate physical layer would use Xtreme's UWB technology, capable of achieving 100 Mbits/s at a power of less than 200 mW. http://www.xtremespectrum.com.
