Math software now runs alone
Staff -- Test & Measurement World, 2/1/2004
Formerly requiring Matlab to run, Femlab 3.0 mathematical modeling software now runs as a stand-alone application. (You can still use Femlab as a Matlab add-on, though.) For version 3.0, Comsol's engineers rewrote the Femlab code in C++ and Java, so the software now computes some models as much as 20 times faster while consuming as much as 20 times less system memory.
Femlab uses the finite-element analysis method to solve models of physical phenomena such as electromagnetics, optics, photonics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and acoustics. Using this software, you can predict how a system will function before you build a prototype. An electromagnetics module lets you use Maxwell's equations to model devices such as antennas and transformers. The package contains models for wave and field propagation to AC and DC applications. Femlab 3.0 runs on Windows 98 and later, Linux, Solaris, and HP-UX.
