Line splitter solves age-old problem

Staff -- Test & Measurement World, 4/1/2004

If you've ever tried to measure current in the hot side of an AC mains line, you had to cut the wire to get access to the hot wire. Or, you made your own wire jig and probably exposed yourself to a live wire. No more. Just plug the ELS2 AC line splitter between your load and any AC receptacle, then attach a DMM AC current clamp or clamp meter to the line splitter.

The ELS2 lets you measure current with either a 1X measurement or a 10x measurement. For 10X, just use the opening marked "10X" because the hot line wraps around the opening 10 times. You can measure line voltage with the ELS2, too. It contains receptacles for multimeter probes. The ELS2 works on any 120 VAC mains line at current up to 15 A.
