Benchtop x-ray system

Staff -- Test & Measurement World, 6/1/2004

Able to handle bare or loaded boards measuring up to 16x18 in., the Verifier portable benchtop x-ray system fits within a 29x32-in. footprint. Suitable for inspection, failure analysis, and verification of reworked BGAs and other SMT devices and connectors, the system provides both top-down and angled viewing in continuous real time of packages with dimensions ranging from 2 to 60 mm. It can discern bridging, missing parts, poor reflow shapes, and voiding.

A high-resolution 80-kV, 33-micron microfocus x-ray tube provides sufficient power to investigate ceramic column grid arrays and BGA devices having metal lids and heat sinks. Each system includes a flat-panel monitor and standard computer. Add-on features include automatic defect software for BGAs, leaded devices, wire bonds, and drilled holes. A system can be placed adjacent to customers' existing rework equipment.

Base price: less than $40,000. FocalSpot, San Diego, CA. 858-536-5050. www.focalspot.com/verifier .
