With all of the wireless applications that are arising, the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of electrical and electronic devices is becoming increasingly important. As a result, EMC standards from the IEC are changing rapidly. In addition to the new edition of the basic immunity test standard IEC-61000-4-3, more than a dozen other EMC standards that expire this year are being replaced by new versions. Here is a quick look at the other changing EMC standards:

· EN 55013:2001—This standard relates to the interference caused by radio and television receivers and associated equipment. Associated equipment includes satellite and cable receivers, converters, and sound equipment designed to be attached to the radio or television. A new amendment has gone into effect.

· EN 60947-2:1996—Covering circuit breakers and low-voltage switching and control devices, this standard and its two amendments has expired and was replaced with a new version.

· EN 60947-5-7:2003—This new standard will replace generic control device standards for proximity control devices with analog output signals. The standard has a narrow product scope. Products not within this scope will continue to use the generic standards.

· EN 60947-8:2003—This new standard replaces generic control device standards for control units having built-in thermal protection for rotating electrical machines. Products not within the narrow scope of this standard will continue to use generic standards.

· EN 61131-2:1994—Covering programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for industrial and manufacturing use, this standard and its amendments expired and were replaced with a new version.

· EN 61326:1997—Equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory test use falls under this standard. It includes equipment that controls one or more output values, including indicators, along with sensors, signal generators, and measurement or analysis equipment. The standard specifies both emissions and immunity requirements for such equipment. A new amendment covering portable equipment and transducers goes into effect later this year.

· EN 62052-11:2003—This new standard replaces generic standards for AC electricity metering equipment.

· EN 62053-11, -21, -22, and -23—These new standards replace a variety of older standards covering AC electricity meters for both active and reactive energy. The standards apply to static meters as well as electromechanical ones.

· EN 12015:1998 and EN 12016:1998—These standards cover emission and immunity for elevators, escalators, and moving sidewalks. They have expired and new versions have gone into effect.

Most of these new standards have already gone into effect. For schedule details, see the table.
