Point Grey launches Grasshopper Series of IEEE-1394b Cameras
-- Test & Measurement World, 6/19/2007 10:20:00 AM
Point Grey Research announced the introduction of its Grasshopper line of IEEE-1394b (FireWire) cameras at the International Robots & Vision Show.
The Grasshopper digital camera offers 1.4-, 2.0-, or 5.0-Mpixel resolution and an IEEE-1394b 800-Mbps digital interface. The Grasshopper cameras target imaging applications including electronics manufacturing, life sciences and microscopy, and surveillance and security.
"A deep understanding of the machine vision and inspection industries was key in designing the hardware platform for the Grasshopper," said Vlad Tucakov, director of Point Grey Research." The Grasshopper line features a wide variety of high resolution, large-format image sensors—including the new Sony ICX625 dual-output 5MP CCD—with the same compact form factor. We chose a 1394b interface because it delivers the best functionality for integrators, manufacturers, and analog users switching to digital."
Key features of the Grasshopper camera include a frame buffer for image storage and retransmission, a high-speed 14-bit analog-to-digital converter, memory channels for defining custom power-up settings, gamma and programmable LUT functions, and nonvolatile memory. Other standard features include multiple trigger and strobe modes, region-of-interest and pixel-binning functions, and a field-updatable FPGA that controls all camera functions.
Like all Point Grey cameras, the Grasshopper complies with the IIDC DCAM v1.31 specification, which allows it to be used with many third-party software packages, such as those from Cognex, Matrox, MVTec, and National Instruments. Also included with every camera is the FlyCapture SDK—a software package for image acquisition and camera control—and the PGRPROTM driver, which enables users to grab images at full 800-Mbps transfer rates.
