2008 Test Engineer of the Year Nominee:
Steve Kobs
-- Test & Measurement World, 10/1/2007
MEDICALSteve Kobs
Test Project Team Leader, GE Healthcare
Describing Kobs' work, Chris Gabel, Test Manager at GE Healthcare, said, "Steve Kobs, supported by team members Jaya Narasimhan and Dennis Sauer, developed an innovative approach to automated manufacturing test. They designed and implemented a "smart" test fixture for GE Healthcare's latest data-acquisition product, CARESCAPE, a patient data module (PDM). This 'one-touch' test fixture incorporates an interface between the typical bundle of parametric cables, and the UUT, allowing for an ergonomic single insertion and automated ejection.
"In conjunction with the Patient Simulator and Test Software, the test fixture has the ability to auto-detect when 'smart' cables have been connected to the UUT. The fixture incorporates insertion-based forced maintenance, such that UUT insertions can be tracked and the fixture can be 'locked out' for preventive maintenance activity after a specified number of insertions. This fixture also has the capability to notify the main test software application that there are a limited number of insertions remaining before lock-out occurs. This insertion-based forced maintenance prevents the manufacturing team from over or under-servicing the fixture, and helps to reduce the number of test-induced failures which may occur.

"Steve Kobs was the project leader for overall PDM test deliverables, including test fixtures, software, and documentation release. In addition to this leadership role, Steve was the sole firmware and FPGA developer, and assumed hardware responsibilities, including development of the PDM Smart Battery test that supports automated battery charger testing. Steve developed Aegis Simulator V5A firmware supporting AegisSim stand-alone operation and menu system, with full backward hardware compatibility."
