AMS Technologies offers optical fiber length meter

European electronic component distributor AMS Technologies announces the availability of OZ Optics’ optical fiber length meter (OFLM). The instrument quickly and accurately measures the length of multimode, single-mode, and polarization-maintaining fibers, including fibers for non-telecom wavelengths, such as visible wavelength single-mode fibers.

You can use the OFLM to measure optical fibers ranging from a few millimeters to 500 m in length with 2-mm resolution and measurement error of less than 0.1% ±1.5mm. The device works by measuring the time it takes for an optical signal to travel along and back through a fiber. By updating the readings once every second, the meter enables continuous monitoring of the fiber length. The readings are communicated to a logging computer through a USB interface.

The Oz Optics’ OFLM is useful for applications requiring precise and repeatable optical fiber length measurement, including cable manufacturing and spooling, strain sensing, and fiber interferometry.
