EXFO launches single-ended dispersion analyzer

-- Test & Measurement World, 12/19/2007 6:00:00 PM

Combining chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) test capabilities in a single module, the FTB-5700 dispersion analyzer from EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering can characterize optical links up to 120 km from a single fiber end. According to the manufacturer, the FTB-5700 is the first instrument that allows you to test PMD from a single fiber end.

The FTB-5700 complements EXFO’s  best-in-class dispersion portfolio, which includes the FTB-5800 CD analyzer and the FTB-5500B PMD analyzer. These two instruments are intended for ultra-long-haul network applications requiring extreme accuracy, while the FTB-5700 is mainly designed for single spans involving 10-Gbit/s turn-ups. Only one field technician and test instrument are necessary to characterize a short or mid-range link (less than 120 km) with sufficient accuracy for access and most metro deployments.

The FTB-5700 is housed in EXFO’s FTB-200 Compact Platform or FTB-400 Universal Test System. Not only can network service providers realize savings in terms of capital and operating expenses, but also they can leverage their installed base of FTB-200 and FTB-400 portable platforms. What’s more, NSPs can benefit from one-button testing that simplifies and accelerates characterization, pass/fail results display for ease of interpretation, and an intuitive GUI to minimize training requirements.
