Rohde & Schwarz wireless test gear covers 700-MHz band

Rohde & Schwarz announced that its full complement of mobile radio test sets and measurement platforms support all wireless standards likely to be employed in the communication systems that result from the FCC’s 700-MHz spectrum auction.
The auction, which began January 24, covers blocks of spectrum between 698 and 806 MHz. The 700-MHz region offers the ability to cover greater distances with less power than can be achieved at higher frequencies, which potentially makes network deployment less expensive. In addition, this is the first auction in which the winning bidders in one of the spectrum blocks (the C block) will have to allow any device or application that conforms to their specifications, as well as FCC rules, to be used on their networks (rather than just those dictated by the spectrum licensee). This precedent-setting requirement may prove to be the beginning of an open platform trend in the wireless industry.
Rohde & Schwarz’ mobile radio one-box testers and systems cover the 700-MHz band and support all major cellular standards competing for the new frequencies, including LTE (the successor to GSM/UMTS), WiMAX, CDMA2000, and 1xEV-DO.
