PCB's sensor measures airbag deployment noise

-- Test & Measurement World, 2/11/2008 9:15:00 AM

The Automotive Sensors division of PCB Piezotronics offers the Model 106M160 high-intensity ICP acoustic microphone for detecting the sound levels of airbag deployment and total impulse of an inflation event occurring inside of an automotive cabin.

The device provides sensitivities of 79.8 mV/kPa (550 mV/psi); a measurement range of 189 dB (57.2 kPa); resolution of 96 dB (1.4 Pa); frequency response of 0.05 Hz to 20 kHz, and filtered output tailored to the human ear. It survives higher intensity signals, up to 216 dB, which would damage most condenser microphones beyond their 3% distortion limit. The piezoelectric pressure microphone is hermetically sealed, while its ICP output makes it easy to use and simple to operate.

Series 106 dynamic pressure sensors also include models that are useful for measuring low-level and high-intensity sound pressure levels, acoustic and ultrasonic, with sensitivities of up to 725 mV/kPa.
