PCB Piezotronics debuts mini MEMS shock accelerometers

-- Test & Measurement World, 4/26/2008 8:43:00 AM

Offered in both single-axis and triaxial configurations, the Series 3991/3993 family of MEMS-based shock accelerometers from PCB Piezotronics has a measurement range of 20,000 g and is said to be among the industry’s smallest. The devices are intended to meet the demanding requirements of aerospace and defense applications, as well as a wide assortment of product testing applications.

These high-amplitude, DC-response acceleration sensors are capable of measuring long-duration transient motion, as well as responding to and surviving extremely fast rise times typical of high-g shock events. Several configurations are available to fulfill a variety of installation requirements, with a standard footprint that is a drop-in replacement for competitive models.

Each style shares the same air-damped acceleration sensing element, which is micromachined from silicon using advanced etching techniques. This tiny element is just 2.5x1.7x0.9 mm and incorporates a seismic mass, protective over-range stops, and a full-active, pieozoresistive Wheatstone bridge, which provides minimal zero shift, very low power consumption, and DC-response capability.
