PCB Auto teams microphone with high-temperature preamp

-- Test & Measurement World, 8/19/2008 9:11:00 AM

The Automotive Sensors Division of PCB Piezotronics offers an IEC-compliant high-temperature acoustic measurement system that combines a prepolarized ICP microphone and preamplifier to allow automotive acoustic testing to +120°C, eliminating the need for high-priced probe microphones. The Model 378B02 also incorporates TEDS technology, allowing larger channel count testing with greater calibration data storage and retrieval, as well as minimized setup time.

The use ICP prepolarized microphones for reliable measurements in high-temperature areas of a vehicle, including underhood, engine, manifold, exhaust pipe, and other hot spots, is typically not possible, due to the temperature limitations of standard microphone preamplifiers. While ICP microphones have standard operating temperatures to +120°C, most microphone preamplifiers cannot perform reliably at temperatures beyond their own standard operating temperature of +70°C. With the extended acoustic measurement temperature range offered by the Model 378B02, the entire acoustic measurement system can now survive the same temperature range as an ICP microphone.

You can use the Model 378B02 for underhood measurements for benchmarking and issue identification, including engine radiated, induction, ancillary, and turbocharger noise; near-field measurements on manifolds; mufflers; exhaust after treatment components; and tailpipe noise.
