Symmetricom and Nokia Siemens team up at the Carrier Ethernet World Congress

-- Test & Measurement World, 10/3/2008 9:09:00 AM

Last week at IIR's Carrier Ethernet World Congress in Berlin, Symmetricom's IEEE 1588v2 grand master clock successfully interoperated with Nokia Siemens Networks' Timing over Packet base stations over a MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) network.

Symmetricom's TimeProvider 5000 enables Nokia Siemens Networks' customers to accelerate their migration from TDM to Ethernet backhaul resulting in cost savings and boosting of network capacity to handle applications like voice, video, and music downloads.

In the Timing over Packet base stations, the TimeProvider 5000 distributes a network reference clock to a large number of PTPv2-enabled NSN base stations. The base station's ability to synchronize its frequency based on the reference received is critical to maintaining service provider service-level agreements, minimizing service disruptions, and eliminating dropped calls.

The Carrier Ethernet World Congress, presented by the MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum), claims to be the largest conference and exhibition for the Ethernet network, after 570 participants attended in 2007.

The EANTC (European Advanced Networking Test Center) hosted the Carrier Ethernet World Interoperability Showcase, and MEF’s Career Ethernet Workshop featured analysis and training in CE network technology implementations, service specifications, and certification. Also at the event, the 2008 EMEA Carrier Ethernet Service Provider of the Year Awards were presented. The awards recognize excellence and leadership in the development, marketing, and delivery of carrier Ethernet business services.

This year’s event focused on the future of carrier Ethernet services and on gathering the knowledge and experience gained in the industry over the last four years.

According to data from Heavy Reading (1Q2008 Carrier Ethernet report), the 28 international vendors represent more than 90% of the carrier Ethernet switch and router market share worldwide.

A 20-page white paper with detailed findings from IIR's Carrier Ethernet World Congress is available for download at http://www.eantc.com/cewc2008.
