Symmetricomm expands IEEE 1588 PTP client portfolio

-- Test & Measurement World, 12/3/2008 7:00:00 AM

Three PTP (Precision Time Protocol) client options from Symmetricomm broaden its IEEE 1588 V2 PTP client portfolio to enable network equipment manufacturers and service providers to migrate existing TDM (time-division multiplexing)-based backhaul networks to more cost-effective Ethernet backhaul. The new clients offer greater flexibility when implementing IEEE 1588 PTP for timing and synchronization in IP-based next-generation networks and include:
• the TimeProvider 500 Translator. For carriers, this external client-in-a-box offers a cost-effective, immediate migration path to Ethernet backhaul with IEEE 1588 PTP;
• the Client Module. For network equipment manufacturers, this board implementation allows rapid integration into base transceiver stations where network vendors can plug and play the IEEE 1588 PTP technology into existing equipment, eliminating entire system upgrades and reducing risk; and
• the Soft Client. This embedded client is a low-cost, flexible option for network design engineers, since they can integrate the software-based client into their own designs.

The TimeProvider 500 Translator is actively engaged in lab trials with numerous network service providers and is shipping in limited quantities. The PTP Client Module and PTP Soft Client are scheduled to ship in early 2009.
