LXI group votes to adopt IEEE 1588 Version 2.0
February 12, 2007

The LXI Consortium’s board of directors recently approved a resolution from the consortium’s technical committee to adopt IEEE 1588 Version 2.0 when that standard is released later this year. The committee wanted to be on record that it plans to adopt the revised standard when it is available. Version 2.0 provides much finer resolution of synchronization, potentially below 1 ns, with less network traffic. The improvements also make IEEE 1588 applicable for a broader range of applications.

LXI Class A and B devices are currently required to conform to Version 1.0 of IEEE 1588. The consortium will make the technical information needed by members and licensees to design for conformance with Version 2.0 available in draft form as early as possible. The consortium will then modify its specifications and related conformance testing procedures to require Version 2.0 as soon as practicable given the status of the IEEE 1588 working group’s activities.

The board also cited the desire to provide members and licensees with timely information regarding anticipated future changes to LXI specifications. This action will allow them to plan product development activities accordingly.

More information on IEEE 1588 Version 2.0 is available on the IEEE working group website: http://ieee1588.nist.gov/. More information regarding the LXI Consortium’s intention to adopt Version 2.0 is available by emailing the LXI Consortium’s technical committee: technical_committee@lists.lxistandard.org. --Paul Franklin, Keithley Instruments, LXI Technical Committee Chair
