Multivendor demo shows we really can work together
October 25, 2006
Visitors to the LXI Consortium booth at Autotestcon 2006 in Anaheim saw two racks jammed with equipment. The racks attracted a lot of attention because unlike the displays in almost all other booths, they contained equipment from many different manufacturers, all LXI Consortium members. The racks were the culmination of many months of effort by the Consortium to produce a multivendor demonstration system for the show. The effort had three main objectives:
1. Test interoperability--testing various types of LXI-conformant equipment from various manufacturers in a simulated test system. Interoperability testing has been done periodically at some PlugFests, but this was an opportunity to do it on a larger, more complex scale. By and large, this effort was a success.
2. Test ease of integration--One aim of the Consortium is to make integrating LXI equipment into a test system as easy and as fast as possible. By forcing ourselves to go through the process of designing, implementing, and testing a complete system, we were able to judge how successfully we met that objective. Our experience shows that we have more work to do in this area.
3. Demonstrate LXI--Producing a compelling demonstration system that would attract attention at trade shows and conferences helps educate attendees about the features and benefits of LXI. Judging by the traffic and the response of visitors to the booth, the Consortium met this objective successfully.
The overriding opinion was that the demonstration successfully displayed the features and benefits of LXI. The experience of designing a multivendor demonstration also showed that while we have made good progress toward easy integration, we still have a long way to go. In the coming weeks, the demonstration team will focus on the lessons learned from this exercise and how we can enhance interoperability.--Paul Franklin, Keithley Instruments, LXI Technical Committee
