Participating in LXI lets you talk to your competition
September 13, 2006
The PlugFest in Cleveland, which I commented on below, was the 5th LXI meeting I have attended. The meetings have allowed me to meet, work with, and get to know people who work for my competitors. Until I got involved with LXI, I never thought that I would be friends with the competition. On top of that, our companies want us to be friends, at least on the LXI front. The reason for this is that LXI member companies decided that was in the best interest of our customers for us to compete based on the "what" our products do rather than how the customer "talks" to it. Achieving that goal required that LXI member companies get together and write a standard. To get this done quickly we had to all work together with the customer's best interest in mind.
What makes the LXI standard even better than other standards that I have worked with is that the member companies have stayed involved after writing the standard. This involvement includes testing (PlugFests) to ensure that the standard really works for the customers and to ensure that certified equipment really meets the standard.
Besides working with my competition, LXI membership has allow me to work closely with senior software development engineers from The MathWorks and National Instruments and to see how their software packages control Elgar Electronics power supplies. Outside LXI, I never would have been able to work so closely with such knowledgeable people.--
