Hybrid instrument systems
August 30, 2006
The two posts below--“PXI and LXI--competitors or complements?” and “NI, Agilent collaborate on drivers”--form an interesting juxtaposition, but there’s really no conflict in NI’s lack of enthusiasm for developing its own LXI instruments while simultaneously expressing interest in developing LabView drivers for Agilent's LXI-compliant instruments.
The collaboration simply represents that each company is facing reality: multivendor instrument systems, often with multiple inter-instrument communications schemes, are here to stay. New Agilent instruments will be more appealing to potential customers if LabView drivers for them are promptly available, and LabView becomes more valuable as it embodies support for more instruments, whether their communications schemes involve LXI-compliant Ethernet or tin cans and a string.
Indeed, NI makes available applications support for hybrid systems that integrating LXI, USB, PXI Express, and other interfaces (except for the tin-can-and-string link).--Rick Nelson
