Systems integrators see promise for LXI
November 14, 2006

At the recent PlugFest in Boston, a group of military/aerospace systems integrators held a panel discussion with the LXI marketing and technical committees. It was one of the liveliest discussions we’ve ever had at a PlugFest, involving a lot of interaction between panel members and the audience.

All the panel members indicated that one technical issue they are dealing with as they design future systems is a common network interface. This will help them manage instrument obsolescence issues. They all agreed that LXI provides a good solution to this problem, allowing them to update instruments easily with few programming hurdles.

They also inquired about drivers used in LXI-compliant instruments. The response was that, although IVI drivers are included as part of the LXI specification, any other type of driver is acceptable, removing another barrier to adoption.

Security was mentioned as a concern, but was quickly dismissed because test systems can easily be disconnected from the worldwide web, blocking external access.--Jon Semancik, VXI Technology, LXI Marketing Committee Co-Chair

Systems integrators definitely face a lot of challenges when figuring out how to best work to solve the complex needs of the different sizes of businesses they serve. As technology becomes more complex, it becomes more difficult to track the current best options for their clients. And also, since each client will have a slightly different, specialized need, having some sort of standards or guidance tools for systems integrators is important. Otherwise creating real relationships with clients based on trust – without a track record of really finding the best solutions – can be very difficult.
