LXI leverages existing technology
November 29, 2006

One big advantage of LXI is leverage. Rather than reinventing the wheel, LXI proponents looked around for existing standards that are already in place, and figured out how those would benefit instrumentation users. Instead of relying on technology advances from the test and measurement industry, LXI is based around Ethernet, which gets its technology advances from the much larger telecommunication and networking industries. LXI users get to “ride the wave” of Ethernet speed improvements of 1-Gbps Ethernet, 10-Gbps Ethernet, and beyond, essentially for free. Plus, you get the cost savings of off-the-shelf networking hardware and components. For less than the cost of a GPIB cable, you can buy all the networking hardware you need for your whole LXI measurement system. Finally, Ethernet provides unique capabilities, such as wireless connectivity, VPNs, and optical isolation that your system may want to take advantage of.--Rob Purser, The MathWorks
