Get ready for pi day
January 21, 2007

The number without end, known as pi, is getting it's own day. Yes, the number that represents that ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter will have it's moment to shine on March 14, 2007 at 1:59 pm Pacific Daylight Time.*  The Exploratorium, a very cool science museum in San Francisco will comemorate the moment. Why March 14 at 1:59? The Exploriatorium web site explains...

"At 1:59pm, celebrants are invited to circumambulate the Pi shrine approximately 3.14 times, since 3.14 is an approximation of Pi. The Pi Shrine is a small brass plate engraved with pi to a hundred digits located on the floor on the mezzanine level of San Francisco’s Exploratorium, the prototype for hands-on science museums around the world. Add beads to a ritual Pi string, where each bead color designates a value for Pi to over 1600 digits, and growing. Music based on the number Pi provides the ambience."

The best part is that participants will get to eat some form of pie, although it's unknown if the pie will be apple or pizza. BTW, March 14 is also Einstein's birthday. Even if you can't get to The Exporatorium at pi time, put it on your itinerary the next time you're in San Francisco.

* This year, most areas in the U.S. shift to Daylight Savings time on the second Sunday of March, which is March 11, 2007.

Cool. I can''t wait to celebrate "e" day on 2/7 at 18:28.

Jon Titus commented:

Shouldn't this "pi" day celebration occur at 1:59 AM? Waiting until 1:59 PM (1359) is just a publicity stunt so people will go to the museum for free pie. No pi day in Europe; it would have to occur on April 31st.

I agree with Jon Titus. Having the celebration occur at 1:15 p.m. for the convenience of the museum staff and attendees is pretty lame. It reminds me of that state legislature somewhere that around 1900 wanted to pass legislation declaring that pi = 3 to make calculations easier for grade-school kids.

Sorry, I meant 1:59, not 1:15. Good observation about no pi day in Europe. "e" day works, though: January 27.

Wouldn't George Bush call it Pie Day? George Washington would call it Cherry Pie Day.

I recently heard that there is actually a annual world competition for those that can remember PI to the most places correctly...I believe that the winner was able to memorize PI correctly to 35,000 places...seems like some folks have way to much free time on their hands..I'm not sure how this relates to the rapidly expanding field of testing technology...but there must be some connection?
