DTV: Two years to go
February 16, 2007

Two years from today is that last day you'll be able to watch analog TV broadcasts in the U.S. On February 17, 2009, all broadcast TV will go digital. Yet, few TV station web sites I've seen mention it, and then only if the drill down into the site.

You may think that everyone has cable or satellite TV and thus won't be affected by the DTV switch, but I know plenty of people who rely on broadcast TV. Why? You can't beat the subcription cost, which is zero.

Last year, I wrote a fake press release describing what I think will happen on February 18, 2009, the day after the switchover. Read it and laugh or weep.

This will probably create a new cottage industry similar to "Geek Squad". Imagine the poor old folks who could care less about ghosts, signal beating from overflying aircraft, or the occasional horizontal roll. Gee, a clever engineer could apply these artifacts to the clear picture (like some digital stations do now to make the content appear "real") and claim to have "fixed" the TV!
