Is SONET fading?
January 15, 2008

In December, I reported that the IEEE had established IEEE 802.3ba as the standard for 100 Gbps Ethernet saying that data center operators will use 40 Gbps data streams while telecom providers will opt for 100 Gbps streams although IEEE 802.3ba will let Ethernet map over 40Gbps SONET networks. A new report from market analysts CIR goes a step further by predicting the demise of SONET. The report claims "The new Ethernet standards will mark the end of the 'cold war' that has existed between the data communications and telecommunications industries since the 1980s." It seems inevitable that the world will run on Ethernet.
