Introducing...Test ideas
July 8, 2008
Beginning in the T&MW August print issue, we’ll replace the “Project Profile” column with “Test Ideas.” Test Ideas will focus on how an engineer solved a test and measurement problem. For the first few issues, we’ll use content submitted to our sister publication EDN for the “Design Ideas” column that have some test application. For example, the August issue will feature a three-chip circuit that lets you generate a low-distortion audio-frequency sine wave.
While we have a few circuits that we can use to get the series going, we need to hear from you. Feel free to submit your ideas for how you solved a test or measurement problem. Your ideas need not involve building a circuit at the component level, although we welcome those. Your idea can revolve around software you wrote to solve a test problem or perhaps some clever mechanical or electronic interface you developed to connect your device to test equipment. Or, perhaps you figured out how to use a little known or undocumented feature in your test equipment. You should also submit ideas for how you configured test equipment for a particular task.
Each Test Idea will includes text and one or two figures. If was have more figures or code listings, we’ll put them in the online version of the article.
If we publish your test idea, we’ll pay you $150 just as EDN does with Design Ideas. But, if by chance that both publications publish your idea, you still get paid only once.
We will publish Test Ideas submitted by working test or design engineers. We won’t publish ideas submitted by marketers who work for test equipment manufacturers. Those articles have a way of turning into product pitches, which we don’t want. Your idea must original. Don’t try to copy an idea from an application note, data sheet, or white paper. Don’t submit an idea that’s already online or that’s been published elsewhere. We’ll be checking for that.
To submit your idea, send an e-mail to TMWtestideas@reedbusiness.com. Put the text in a text file or Word document (between 350 and 550 words) so we can easily edit your idea of we choose to publish it. If you have any diagrams or photos, you can embed them in the text, but please send them as separate files as well. We can accept most graphic formats such as TIF, BMP, or JPG. We can also accept text and graphics in PDF format, but they are more work for us to edit.
