Help me with handheld oscilloscopes
April 27, 2007

I'm working on a project where I'll evaluate four handheld oscilloscopes and I'd like your help. What tests should I perform on them? I have a 20 MHz function generator on my test bench. I also have a PC and software for the scopes. The oscilloscopes come from AEMC, Agilent, Fluke, and Protek. If you use handheld oscilloscopes from any of these companies, tell me what you like or don't like about them.

Send test suggestions to me at m.rowe@tmworld.com. I'll report my findings in this blog and eventually in print.

Click here to go to the evaluations.

I used a Fluke 192 for about 4 years for field measurements, until it failed on me. I returned it to the factory for repair, and they sent it back to me damaged. About six months later, it failed again. Fluke customer support is a joke. The quality of their products has declined significantly over the years (I have had similar experiences with their AC/DC current clamp and a pressure transducer). I want reliable equipment, especially if I am paying a premium price. I have abandoned the idea of a Handheld scope as a result of this experience, and now use a Link Systems scope with a laptop. Same functionality, better screen resolution (larger screen), real time FFT, etc.
