The TV antenna makes a comeback
March 1, 2007

For the last year, I've wondered if the switch to broadcast digital TV would give me a reason to dump cable. Apparently, I'm not alone. An article on the Boston Globe on February 27 points out that people are rediscovering TV antennas because the switch to DTV means you can get clear and even high-definition pictures without cable. Of course, you're limited to local channels, but most people subscribe to cable for a better picture on local stations.

I hope the trend away from cable, telco, and satellite TV to terrestrial DTV accelerates. Maybe then, TV service provders will realize that they should compete on price, not on services, especially for basic TV. Alas, they won't because they just don't get it. Instead, they'll just raise the prices to those who can't live without 300 channels to make up to profits they lose as some people go back to terrestrial TV.

The ONLY reason we don't have an antenna is that my wife loves the Food Channel and HGTV. I won't divorce her over this issue, but I find it foolish to fork over $70/month when it can be had for nothing. The trend to antennas will accelerate once folks realize that HD is a freebie.
