Preparing for the knowledge loss
June 8, 2007

On June 1, the Naval Surface Warfare Center--Corona Division (NSWC-Corona) announced that it has received the Outstanding Leadership in Executive Education Award from the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. NSWC-Corona received the award for its employee-education program, designed to pass knowledge from senior engineers nearing retirement to younger engineers. NSWC-Corona is the Navy's central facility for measurement science.

I've heard concerns from engineers, particularly those who work in metrology as well as in EMC about the impending loss of technical knowledge from the workforce. As senior engineers born shortly after World War II begin to retire, they take valuable knowledge with them. What is your company doing about it?

I heard about this award on May 24 when I visited NSWC-Corona to interview engineers for our August cover story. Technical Director John Fishell was in Indiana accepting the award during my visit.

Most managers I see in our business group have very little thought on the subject. One can tell by the age distribution in each group.
