Fiber continues to roll
April 2, 2007

Another study shows that fiber continues to proliferate, reaching ever more homes. In "Digital video drives network changes," I reported on two studies showing the growth of fiber, both passing by and connected to homes. The Telecommunications Industry Association has released its own report, "Fiber-to-the-Home Connections Continue to Accelerate" The report claims that "1.34 million homes are now connected to the internet via end-to-end fiber, with FTTH now passing 7.9 million homes. This compares to 671,000 connections and 4.1 million homes passed as of March 2006." The trends all point to the same thing: good times ahead for the communications in fiber-optic industries, and thus for equipment needed to test them.

Does your home have fiber connected to it? How well does it work? I don't expect to have the option of subscribing to a fiber-based service for a long time, partly because of local politics and partly because of my house's construction.
