Nine-year-old PC finally retired
May 21, 2007
With some sadness, I retired my 300 MHz Windows 98 PC to the basement. I've replaced it with a Windows XP laptop. I refused to jump to Vista because of the multitude of issues I'd have to contend with, particularly new drivers. My Windows XP machine is just two years old, so I figure it has plenty of life left.
In the basement, the 300 MHz Windows 98 PC replaces a 133 MHz windows 98 PC. I dismantled the 133, saving the hard drive, floppy drive, CD-ROM drive, and sound card. The hard drive is large enough to install in an enclosure for use as an extra backup. The CD and floppy are good to have in case a drive in my XP machine fails. The remainder of the 133 MHz PC will, unfortunately, end up in a landfill because my community has no recycling program for old computer parts.
The 300 MHz PC was a good machine (still is, actually). I'll probably keep it as a backup computer for a long time.
