Engineers conserve energy
September 10, 2007

The other day, I attended a lecture given by Roger Gottlieb professor of philosophy at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (my alma mater). Gottlieb spoke about environmentalism as it relates to politics, ethics, and religion, with emphasis on  how we're running out of energy. Although Gottlieb teaches at at science and engineering university, he didn't mention contribution that engineers toward conservation. Engineers work hard every day to minimize electrical power consumption in the products they develop. It's not just in battery-operated devices (cell phones, mp3 players, etc.), but in AC mains powered products from refrigerators to computers. Without the energy efficiency that engineers design into products, we'd be running out of energy at a faster rate.

In the end, it will be engineers that will repair the worldwide energy problem, without receiving the credit.
