Communications traffic is increasing
November 13, 2006
Earlier this year, market research firm Frost & Sullivan predicted growth in the market for SONET/SDH test equipment. In a press release, the company cites in increase in deployments of 10 Gb and 40 Gb deployments, resulting in a need for equipment to test these technologies.
The need for SONET/SDH test equipment stems from an increase in Internet traffic. “Asia is a big market” said analyst Sujan Sami in a telephone interview with me last week. “Jitter and wander measurements for OC192 and OC768 require new equipment.” Sami cites an increase in video and voice traffic as a catalyst for the growth. He also cited a continuing growth in wireless traffic. Remember, wireless traffic travels over wireline communications networks between base stations.
The increase in traffic also comes from the fact that each day, more people subscribe to high-speed Internet access (cable and DSL). In a report from IGI Consulting dated November 1, both the telcos and the cable operators are seeing an upturn in subscribers. The company now predicts that DSL lines will overtake cable modems in mid-2007. Still the number of cable models put into service in Q3 2006 was the largest quarterly increase in two years.
Any way you look at it, Internet traffic is increasing and the telecom equipment glut that came about five years ago is eroding. With it comes the need for more test equipment.
