Power dependent
August 8, 2007

Walking the corridors of the Austin Convention Center this afternoon during NI Week, I'm struck by the large number of people using laptop PCs. The wireless connectivity is pretty good here and everyon is checking e-mail. I did see one engineer writing LabView code just before today's keynote speeches.

I too had my laptop on during the keynote speeches today. I wrote about the presentations as they happend and I'll send them in for posting to tmworld.com later today. The keynote presentations lasted 90 minutes, which is nearly my laptop's battery life. When I attended a technical session immediately after the keynote, I had to find a seat near an AC mains outlet if I wanted to wrte about the session. In session after session, meeting after meeting, and just lounging around the halls, people wanted to sit withing their power cord's reach of electricity. I took the photo in one of the technical sessions and as you can see, all four outlets near my seat were in use.

One day, we'll be freed from AC outlet dependency and our computers will run all day without needing a charge. Hopefully, my battery will last long enough to post this note.

By the way, you can read an NI Week blog at http://forums.lavag.org/blog/niweek2007/index.php.
