Most overused acronym
September 27, 2007

The engineering world is full of acronyms. Some, like ASCII, have become words in themselves. But none, I believe can top "IP" for number of uses. I can think of four.

* Internet protocol: The organization of bits into packets used to transfer data over the Internet.
* Intellectual property: Usually refers to the internal design of a field-programmable gate array.
* Instrument panel: Most often used in the automotive industry, but also used in aerospace.
* Intercept point: Usually followed by the number 2 or 3, used in intermodulation distortion measurements.

Second place, as far as I can tell, goes to SI, which may stnad for "signal integrity" or "synthetic instruments."

Can you think of more? Post a comment.

Here's another one, "Ingress Protection." It refers to circuit design for protecting against dust and humidity.
