Back up or really die
February 21, 2007

In my December 20 posting, "Back up or (nearly) die," I described how my home PC crashed and how I recovered by formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows and all my probrams. that took three days to do. I had attributed the problem to uninstalling some poorly written software. Not.

The other day, the problem returned. The PC worked in the morning, then crashed when turned on again that afternoon. Lacking the time to diagnose the problem, I brought the system back to the small computer store where I had the system built. Diagnosis: a failing hard drive. Fortunately, the technician was able to save an image of the original drive and copy it to a new drive. Thus, I don't have to reinstall anything. Even if I had to reload Windows and all my programs, I would have lost no data because all of my files and e-mails were backed up. You can't back up your data too frequently.
