In measurements you trust?
January 31, 2007

Engineers rarely take things for granted. I believe that's espicially true when it comes to analog measurements. But, which type of engineer is the most skeptical of measurements? While researching an upcoming article, I heard someone say "RF engineers trust nothing." I'm confident in that statement's validity, but I think metrologists must be the most measurement skeptical. Have you ever seen the U.S. Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement? Metrologists don't simply make a measurement, they consider the uncertainty of the measurement and the confidence level they have that actual value falls within the measured value plus or minus the uncertainty. Remember, every measurement is an estimate.

I agree ... Metrologists are not only interested in measurement data and uncertainties but also the confidence in which these values are stated. From a Metrologist’s view measurement data without measurement uncertainty and associated confidence level is incomplete. One could get the impression that Metrologists originate from Missouri …. the SHOW ME state.
