Requesting help with HP8902
March 27, 2007
Engineers often face problems with replacements for obsolete test equipment. Here's another example. An engineering student writes about the HP (Agilent) 8902:
Has anyone performed an impact study to determine how the replacement N5530S emulates the 8902?
What's the overall cost of the replacement unit? What is its emulated performance with any drawbacks? How is the instrument language structured given the extreme differences between a power meter and spectrum analyzer commands as opposed to native 8902 commands -- including the number of instruments presrenty calibrated & tested with this unit (this must also have a major impact on Agilent's calibration labs)?
Do you know of any white papers or impact studies on the subject? I am writing a paper on these obsolescence problems and the impact on military & commercial including educational markets needs to be addressed in this paper.
How well proliferated this instrument is in terms of worldwide cal labs, etc. Do you have any data that you might be willing to share?
Can you help this engineering student? Post your comments.
